Analysis of two parallel passages in Iliad 9 discloses that the earlier lines were composed after the later ones. Despite the traditional nature of epic diction, "it does not follow... that no occurrence of a traditional phrase is secondary, still less that no departure from a traditional phrase is secondary" (4).
